SEATTLE (Nov. 10) Less than three years
after it began play, the Seattle Pacific University womens
soccer team is going to the NCAA tournament.
The 10th-ranked Falcons (17-1-2) are seeded No.
3 in the region and will play No. 17 Cal State Dominguez Hills
(16-4-1) in San Diego Saturday night (Nov. 15) in a first-round
playoff. Host and No. 3-ranked UC San Diego (16-2-0) plays Cal
State San Bernardino (11-7-2).
The winners to meet Monday (Nov. 17) for the
Far West Region championship and the right to host the Midwest
victor in a quarterfinal game Nov. 22. Game times for the regional
tournament are tentatively set for 5 p.m. and 7:30 Saturday.
Mondays game time has yet to be determined. The 32-team
Division II tournament culminates with the Final Four Dec. 4 and 6
in Virginia Beach.
SPU takes a 10-game winning streak and an
unbeaten run of 17 consecutive games into the postseason. Its only
loss was to Dominguez Hills, 2-1 in Carson, Ca., Sept. 1. The
difference was an own goal with less than 30 minutes left.
Seattle Pacifics inaugural game at Point
Loma Nazarene on Aug. 25, 2001, was less than 15 miles away from
Triton Soccer Stadium on the UC San Diego campus. Five members of
the original team will make the trip south this week.
The Falcons won the Great Northwest Athletic
Conference crown in 2002 and repeated that feat this year, going
11-0-1 in conference games.
