SPU Men Beat 21st-Ranked Aggies, Clinch Winning Season
November 7, 2003

SEATTLE (Nov. 7) – Jeremy Yerkes and Michael Morris scored first-half goals less than four minutes apart and Seattle Pacific University held onto beat 21st-ranked UC Davis 2-1 in the Falcons’ final men’s soccer game Friday night at Interbay Stadium.

With the victory, Seattle Pacific finishes 9-8-2, extending its NCAA Division II record for consecutive winning seasons to 33. The Aggies, bound for Division I next season, dropped to 9-5-4.

Morris (Fr., Bothell, Wa./Blanchet) came off the bench in the 21st minute and immediately made an impact. His through ball down the left flank found Yerkes alone with UC Davis keeper Nic Platter. A first shot was tipped in the air by Platter but Yerkes headed the rebound into an empty net at 20:53.

Yerkes set-up what proved to be the game-winning goal at 24:41, cutting a pass through the crease. Morris beat Platter to the ball and slammed a short-range shot into the roof of the goal. Yerkes scored six goals and had three assists in the final five games and finished the season with nine goals and 24 points.

After UC Davis squandered several scoring chances, Ryan Shaw pulled his team a goal back in the 73rd minute. He scored his 14th goal of the season by running onto a pass from Nick Bosch and drilling a low 8-yard shot past SPU keeper James Ward.

The toughest of Ward’s six saves came against Shaw with 23 minutes left as he dived to make a stop at point-blank range. The Ags nearly sent the game into overtime in the dying seconds, but after a goalmouth scramble, Johnny Yau shot high from 10 yards.

Shaw had missed a golden opportunity in the first half, smacking a penalty kick off the middle of the crossbar in the 33rd minute.

UC Davis finished with a 21-9 edge in shots, most from long range. The Falcons were not credited with a second-half shot as they were frustrated by the Davis offside trap. Altogether, Seattle Pacific was flagged 11 times for offside.
