SPU Men Claim Preseason Basketball Opener in Double Overtime

SEATTLE (Nov. 6) – Jason Chivers scored seven of his 36 points in the second overtime period and also collected 15 rebounds to lift Seattle Pacific University over Northwest Sports 108-106 in a preseason exhibition basketball game at Brougham Pavilion Thursday night.

Chivers (Jr., 6-8, Palmdale, Ca.) gave the Falcons the lead, 106-105, from close range with 1:08 remaining. Chad Williams added two free throws with 29 seconds left.

Andre Lang had a triple double for the Sports, finishing with 21 points, 13 boards and 12 assists. His driving layup had forced the second extra period. The visitors erased an 11-point deficit in the final five minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime.

Newcomers Ralph Steele (Jr., 6-2, N. Birmingham, Al.) scored 19 points–all after halftime–and Dustin Bremerman (Fr., 6-4, Yakima, Wa./Eisenhower) had 18 for SPU, which trailed 11-0 after the first three minutes and 38-29 at intermission.

Seattle Pacific trailed by 14 before surging into the lead with a 29-3 burst midway through the second half. Steele scored 14 of the points and also had two assists during the spree.

Chivers hit 13 of 17 field goals, including one three-pointer. The Falcons, after a slow start, shot 58 percent from the field (39-81) while Northwest was 38-88 (47 percent).

The Falcons host The Son’s Blue Angels in their second final preseason exhibition Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
