SEATTLE (Nov. 1) Ian Churskys
re-taken penalty kick with 5:24 remaining in the second overtime
period gave Seattle University a 3-2 win over Seattle Pacific in a
Great Northwest Athletic Conference mens soccer game in the
rain at Interbay Stadium Saturday night.
Churcky, whose first spot kick was saved by SPU
goalkeper James Ward, was given a second chance when the referee
ruled that defenders entered the restraining arc prematurely.
After vehement protests by several SPU players, Churcky then drove
the second penalty low into the left corner, giving the Redhawks
(11-5-0) the inaugural Caffe DArte Coffee Cup and keeping
their postseason hopes alive.
Seattle Pacific (7-8-2) trailed at halftime but
took the lead by scoring twice in the first 5:05 of the second
half. Jeremy Yerkes set-up both scores, first a 6-yard shot by
Ross Vaillancourt at 45:27, and then Manfredo Rendons volley
from 8 yards.
But much like the earlier meeting between the
two teams, Seattle U. rallied, tying the game at 2-2 on Alex
Churskys 20-yard drive which deflected into the left corner
at 75:06. Andy Stromberg had opened the scoring in the 29th
minute.
Yerkes nearly won it for SPU in the 96th minute
but SU goalie Brandon Sewell made an outstretched save at the left
corner.
Seattle Pacific finished with a 22-15 advantage
in shots and 11-1 in corner kicks. Referee Mark Matthews issued a
total of nine yellow cards to the teams.
