PHOENIX (Oct. 20) -- For the first time in over
a year, Seattle Pacific University scored first but could not make
it last, losing a nonconference men's soccer game to Cal State San
Bernardino, 2-1 in 100-degree heat Monday afternoon.
David Smith (Jr., Corvallis, Or.) staked the
Falcons (6-6-2) to a lead in the 19th minute. SPU was 15-0-3 in
the last 18 games in which it scored first. It was only their
second loss in the last 10 contests.
But the Coyotes (9-7-1) scored twice on
counterattacks in the final 32 minutes, including the game-winner
by Nick Hadjiconstantis with 2:55 remaining.
The Falcons got two opportunities to send the
match in overtime, but both Michale Morris (Fr., Bothell,
Wa./Blanchet) and Jeremy Yerkes (Jr., Gresham, Or.) were unable to
convert open shots in the final minutes.
It was a Morris free kick which set-up Smith
for his first goal of the year at 18:30.
San Bernardino, which had beaten SPU 1-0 Sept.
8, tied the score on Johnny Richardson's 12th goal in the 59th

Seattle Pacific, which plays its final five
games at home, hosts Humboldt State in a Great Northwest Athletic
Conference game Friday at 4.
