Late Goal by Vaillancourt Pushes SPU Men Past Antelopes
October 18, 2003

PHOENIX (Oct. 18) -- Ross Vaillancourt scored the game's only goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to lift Seattle Pacific University over Grand Canyon, 1-0 in a nonconference men's soccer game Saturday night.

Vaillancourt (So., Manchester, NH) played a ball into Andy Willis (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wa.) at the top of the box and then took a short return pass before shooting inside the near post, past Canyon goalie Byron Bent with 3 minutes, 50 seconds remaining. It was Vaillancourt's second goal of the season.

It was the 547th career victory for SPU Coach Cliff McCrath and the Falcons (6-5-2) have now lost just once in their last nine games.

James Ward (Jr., Salem, Or.) and Michael Lockwood (Fr., Wilsonville, Or.) split the game in goal, with Ward playing the second half in midfield. Together, they made just one save and Grand Canyon (2-10-1) attempted just three shots.

SPU faces Cal State San Bernardino Monday afternoon before returning home for the final five matches.
