BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Oct. 11) -- Behind the
top-seven finishes of Jamie Witt and Josie Lavin, the 24th-ranked
Seattle Pacific University women's cross country team won the
Western Washington Invitational at Lake Padden Park Saturday.
Witt (Jr., Folsom, Ca.) took second place and
was first among collegians while Lavin (Jr., Bremerton, Wa.) was
seventh overall. The Falcons scored a comfortable victory with 59
points, compared to runner-up Central Washington's 78. It was the
first time SPU has won at Lake Padden since 1981.
Witt, who was timed in 22 minutes, 14 seconds
over the 6000 meters, has now finished among the top three runners
in each of her five meets. Nathalie Cote was the winner in 21:59.
Lavin, who missed the previous meet, was timed in 22:52.
Abby Groth (So., Roseburg, Or.), Ruth Harbaugh
(So., Gig Harbor, Wa.) and Summer Huntington (Fr., Marysville,
Wa./M-P) were the other SPU scorers, finishing 18th, 24th and
29th, respectively.
Western Washington easily secured the men's
team title with 34 points. Alaska Anchorage was next with 70.
Seattle Pacific was fifth with 107. Eric Kaiauka ran first in
31:52 over the first 10k trail of the season. The Falcons' Tim
LeCount (So., Battle Ground) was ninth in 32:57. Paul Mach (Sr.,
Seattle, Wa./King) was 23rd in 34:05.
SPU is idle next weekend and resumes
competition Oct. 25 at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference
Championships in Monmouth, Ore.
