Falcon Women Win 12th in a Row at Home, 1-0 Over Western
October 9, 2003

SEATTLE, Wa. (Oct. 9) -- Shannon Lovejoy scored in the first half to lift Seattle Pacific University over Western Washington 1-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

The victory was the 12th straight at home dating back to '02 for the Falcons (5-0-1/9-1-2). SPU is unbeaten in its last nine matches.

Lovejoy (So., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep.) hit net mid way through the first half at 29:05 with assistance from teammate Megan Lienhard (So., Everett, Wa./Cascade). The sophomore midfielder fielded Lienhard's left-side pass in the midst of Western's defense, turned inside and rifled a shot to the left post past keeper Theresa Fish from 12 yards out.

The score marked Lovejoy's eighth goal of the season and was Lienhard's fifth assist.

Seattle Pacific nearly made it 2-0 in the second half when midfielder Sarah Melby (Jr., Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak/Idaho) caromed a 30 yard blank off the top of the Viking crossbar. Heidi Jacobson (So., Kirkland, Wa./Cedar Park Christian/Gonzaga) attempted to head Melby's rebound past Fish, but the shot was just wide.

The Falcons out shot Western Washington 15-6, and held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. Fish registered seven saves in the match while SPU's Jennifer Hull (Jr., Eugene, Or./Sheldon) tallied four saves.

The loss dropped Western Washington to (2-4-1/4-9-1).

Seattle Pacific hits the road for its next three matches and plays next in a GNAC matinee at Western Oregon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 o'clock on Saturday (Oct. 11). The Falcons return to Interbay Oct. 23, to face Seattle University.
