SEATTLE (Sept. 25) -- David Selby's long-range
strike with less than 18 minutes remaining lifted Seattle Pacific
University to a 1-0 victory over San Francisco State in a
non-conference men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium Thursday
night.
James Ward (Jr., Corvallis, Or.) made two saves
as the Falcons (3-4-1) extended their unbeaten string to four
games with their third shutout over that span. The Gators (3-7-0)
lost their fifth in the last six.
Selby (Jr., Aloha, Or.), who had narrowly
missed a goal in the first period, took a look up on the right
wing and drove the ball 30 yards over Gators keeper Gabriel Hall
and into the upper left corner in the 71st minute for his first
goal of the year.
Less five minutes earlier, Jeremy Yerkes (Jr.,
Gresham, Or.) had narrowly missed putting SPU ahead. With Hall out
of the net, Yerkes cut the ball back and fired at the open goal
from 18 yards but a defender deflected it inches wide for a corner
kick.
SPU finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots and
4-2 in corner kicks.
The win was the 544th of Coach Cliff McCrath's
career, tying him with retired San Francisco coach Steve Negoesco
for No. 2 all-time (all divisions). Wheaton's Joe Bean is the
current and active leader with 547. The opening half produced only
one clear scoring opportunity. Selby fired an 18-yard drive off
the left post with 8 minutes remaining and Nick Letts shot wide on
the rebound.
SPU hosts defending NCAA II champion Sonoma
State Saturday night at 7:30.
