Falcon Men Fall to 0-3 on Sudden Death Goal
September 6, 2003

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Sept. 6) -- Kyle Gookins of Cal State Bakersfield scored the only goal of the game with less than 4 minutes remaining in the second sudden-death overtime as the 9th-ranked Roadrunners edged Seattle Pacific University 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday night.

The Falcons (0-3-0), off to their worst start in 33 years, were held scoreless for the second time in three games but forced seven saves from Bakersfield (2-0-0) goalie Josh Wicks. David Smith produced the best scoring opportunity for Seattle Pacific, taking a long punt from keeper James Ward and sending a drive that Wicks managed to smother.

The game's only goal came off a counterattack, as a long ball from Alfredo Chavez found Gookins alone against Ward from 14 yards.

It's the first time SPU has gone winless in its first three games since 1970 -- Cliff McCrath's first as head coach.

Seattle Pacific meets Cal State San Bernardino Monday night in Bakersfield.
