CARSON, Calif. (Sept. 1) -- An own goal proved
to be the difference as Cal State Dominguez Hills dealt the
Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team its first defeat of
the season, 2-1, Monday night at Toro Stadium.
The Falcons (2-1-0), who had not allowed a goal
in their first two wins, held the lead at halftime. But after the
Toros (2-0-0) tied it in the 50th minute, a errant clearance by
defender Chrissy Berke went into the SPU net at 61:48 and turned
out to be the decisive score.
Sarah Melby (Jr., Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak) scored
her third goal in two games, giving Seattle Pacific a 1-0 lead in
the 20th minute with a long-range blast. Nikki Szlak of Dominguez
Hills knotted the score early in the second period with a shot
from 12 yards.
SPU was held to just one corner kick and three
second-half shots, finishing with a total of seven to the Toros'
10. Keeper Jennifer Hull (Jr., Eugene, Or.) made four saves. Her
string of scoreless minutes ended at 229. The Falcons now return
home to host Sonoma State Saturday at 3 at Interbay Stadium.
