CARSON, Calif. (Sept. 1) -- Missing its head
coach and one of its top forwards, Seattle Pacific University
succumbed 3-2 to Chico Stateon a late goal in the second round of
the Far West Classic Monday at Toro Stadium.
The Falcons (0-2-0) got goals from Jeremy
Yerkes (Jr., Gresham, Or.) and Nick Letts (So., Dublin, Ca.) but
gave up two goals in the final 27 minutes, including the
game-winner by Chris Wondolowski--his second goal of the
game--with 6:27 remaining.
Coach Cliff McCrath and junior striker David
Smith--each serving a one-match suspension after being issued red
cards in Saturday's loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills--both sat in
the stands during the match.
Following a 9th-minute strike from Wondolowski,
Yerkes tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes later from Sean
Sandin's (Jr., Renton, Wa./Kentridge) assist. Three seconds into
the second half, Letts met a Ross Vaillancourt cross at the far
post for a 2-1 lead.
Jaime Rodriguez pulled the Wildcats (2-0-0)
even by converting a cross from Wondolowski in the 64th minute
before Wondolowski headed home the winner.
Goalie James Ward (Jr., Salem, Or.) made four
saves, including a stop of a Chico penalty kick. The Wildcats
finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots and 7-3 in corners.
SPU resumes play Saturday night at Cal State
Bakersfield.
