SEATTLE (Aug. 23) -- Kevin Forrest and Sean
Giudice scored goals less than 3 minutes apart as Washington dealt
Seattle Pacific University a 2-1 exhibition defeat Saturday night
at Husky Soccer Field.
The Falcons pulled a goal back on free kick by
freshman Michael Morris in the 81st minute but didn't manage
another shot on frame. Nick Letts sent a 25-yard try well over the
bar with 6 minutes to go.
SPU, which played without two of its top
scorers last season -- Jeremy Yerkes and David Smith -- due to
injuries, opens the regular season Saturday night at Cal State
Dominguez Hills, the No. 9-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
Washington meets UNLV in Portland Saturday.
Following a scoreless and evenly played first
half, Washington asserted itself in the second period, applying
greater pressure on the ball.
After winning possession with Falcons' half,
Jeff Hoover found Forrest for a 12-yard shot to the left post at
50:26.
Seattle Pacific quickly replied, with Ross
Vaillancourt forcing a save from UW goalie Chris Eylander. But the
Huskies' Giudice then hit the right post from 2 yards and he then
poked a slow roller into the net for what proved to be the
game-winner at 52:49.
James Ward, SPU keeper, made four saves,
including a point-blank stop of a Forrest volley with 27 minutes
remaining. After Jeremy Bonner was fouled near the top of the box,
Morris curled his 20-yard free kick low into the right corner.
The Huskies, ranked among the top 25 in one
Div. I preseason poll, finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots and
generally controlled the midfield in the second half, largely due
to the work of captain C.J. Klaas.
