SEATTLE (June 2) -- Marcus Hahnemann, a
three-time All-America goalkeeper at Seattle Pacific University
and now with Reading FC of the English first division, has been
named to the 23-man United States Men's National Team roster for
the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup, later this month in France.
Hahnemann, a 1994 graduate of SPU and Seattle
native, received his first call-up to the national team in nine
years, having earned three caps in 1993. His strong play in the
nets helped Reading reach the promotion playoffs this past season.
He has played for Fulham and Reading in England for the past five
seasons. Earlier, Hahnemann was with the Seattle Sounders
(1994-96) of the A-League and Major League Soccer's Colorado
Rapids (1997-98).
Hahnemann, 30, is the Falcons' only three-time
All-America selection. He led SPU to the 1993 NCAA Division II
Championship and was later chosen the school's athlete of the
year. He attended Bellevue's Newport High School.
The American squad, which also includes keepers
Tim Howard of the MLS MetroStars and Joe Cannon of France's RC
Lens, has begun training in Washington, D.C. Team USA hosts New
Zealand Sunday in Richmond, Va., and departs June 11 for its home
base in Lyon.
The U.S. opens the Confederations Cup against
two World Cup semifinalists, facing Turkey June 19 in St. Etienne
and then taking on Brazil June 21 in Lyon. The U.S. concludes
group play against Cameroon June 23 in Lyon. The top two teams
from each group advance to the semifinals June 26. The third-place
match is scheduled for June 28, and the final takes place June 29
in Paris. |
