Foreman Invitational Results
SEATTLE (May 10) - Laura Widman and Josie Lavin
of Seattle Pacific University each earned likely trips to the NCAA
Division II Track & Field Championships with their respective
winning marks in the heptathlon and 1500 meters Saturday during
the Ken Foreman Invitational at Husky Stadium.
Widman (Sr., Colfax, Wa.) posted the No. 9
qualifying score in Division II and won the two-day, seven-event
competition with 4771 points. A two-time All-America in the
heptathlon, Widman had been unable to train the past two weeks
while wearing a walking boot to help heal a stress fracture in her
foot. Among her second-day marks were season-highs in the long
jump (17 feet, 7 inches) and javelin (122-0).
Lavin (So., Bremerton, Wa./Bremerton) probably
clinched a place in the NCAA Championships later this month with a
strong kick over the final 300 meters, lopping nearly 5 seconds
off her previous best to win the 1500 in 4:33.91. It is the No. 11
time in the nation. Sarah Leonard of Club Northwest was second in
4:35.69.
Sarah Kraybill (Sr., Seattle, Wa./Ballard) won
her fourth 800 in six starts, taking the lead after 500 meters and
then holding off Washington's Lindsay Egerdahl to win in 2:09.54.
Egerdahl finished in 2:10.36. Kraybill has won a total of 12 races
from 400 to 1500.
In the final meet of the regular season, the
Falcons won five events altogether. Paul Mach (Jr., Seattle,
Wa./King's) won for the fourth time this season in the 400
hurdles, in 53.11. However it was not a season-best and he remains
a long shot (No. 17) for qualifying. Chris Randolph (Fr., Lone
Tree, Co./Denver Christian) won the decathlon with a personal-best
score of 6288, still 212 shy of the provisional qualifying
standard.
Other SPU qualifying prospects were unable to
improve their positions. Dianna Grossglass (Fr., LaConner, Wa.),
ninth in qualifying, high-jumped 5-3 and finished third. In the
pole vault Allie Hedges (Fr., Richland, Wa.) remains no higher
than 15th. She was well under her season best at 10-10 1/4. Ally
Studer (Jr., Redmond, Wa./Redmond), virtually assured a spot at
nationals, was runner-up to Washington's Kate Soma (12-5 1/2) at
11-10.
Danielle Ayers-Stamper (Fr., LaCrosse, Wa.),
ranked No. 2 in the heptathlon, was third in the high jump (5-5)
and fifth in the javelin (127-10) before scratching her other two
events.
Seattle Pacific's other top-five finishes
included Jamie Witt (So., Folsom, Ca.), second in the 5000
(17:48.49); Kelsey Gleason (Fr., Salem, Or.), fifth in the 400
hurdles (1:06.20) and Becky Knox (Fr., Denver, Co./Denver
Christian), fifth in the 10,000 (42:30.77).
Micah Kellcy (Sr., Lakewood, Wa./Clover Park)
moved into No. 5 on the school 400 hurdles list with a
personal-best time of 54.68.
Two meet records were broken, including the
men's hammer throw mark which had stood since 1996. Scott Boothby
of Club Northwest added more than 10 feet to the record with a
winning fling of 226-9. Seattle University's Kelly Fullerton set a
new women's steeplechase standard at 11:12.34. There were no
multiple winners.
Berths for the NCAA Division II Track &
Field Championships will be announced Tuesday. The national meet
is May 22-24 in Edwardsville, Ill.
