Widman on Pace for Heptathlon Standard After Four Events
May 9, 2003

SEATTLE (May 9) - Laura Widman of Seattle Pacific University was the first-day leader in the Ken Foreman Invitational heptathlon with a score which would put her on pace for qualifying for the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships.

Meanwhile, the Falcons' Chris Randolph (Fr., Lone Tree, Co./Denver Christian) was in first place halfway through the decathlon, also held at Husky Stadium. The decathlon and heptathlon will conclude Saturday, following the rest of the activity at the Foreman Invitational. Field events begin at 9 a.m. and races at 10 a.m. Admission is free.

Widman (Sr., Colfax, Wa.), who has been troubled by foot and hamstring injuries throughout the season, scored 2815 points through the first four events. The provisional qualifying standard is 4400 but it will likely take more than 4750 points to earn a berth in the national meet, May 22-24 in Edwardsville, Ill.

Although only her 100-meter hurdles time of 15.7 seconds was a season-best mark,Widman's consistency carried the day. She high-jumped 5 feet, 2 1/2 inches, threw the shot 38-6 1/4 and ran the 200 dash in 26.6.

Widman won the latter two events. Teammate Linda Blake (Fr., Richland, Wa.), seeking to improve her qualifying score of 4446, did not clear an opening height in the high jump. Linfield's Lindsey McCall was in second place with 2528.

Randolph, the runner-up in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference decathlon two weeks ago, enjoyed his best-ever first-day score, totaling 3321 points through five events. It included a personal-best shot put of 33-2 1/2 and a season-best high jump of 6-4 3/4. Central Washington's Chris Peterson , the GNAC champion, was leading until he no-heighted in the high jump. Jason Radel of SPU scored 2816.

The final day of the decathlon features the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 run. The heptathlon concludes with the long jump, javelin and 800 run.
