MONMOUTH, Ore. (Apr. 25) Danielle
Ayers-Stamper of Seattle Pacific University won the heptathlon
title and helped give the Falcons an early jump on their fourth
straight team championship at the Great Northwest Athletic
Conference multi-event meet Friday at McArthur Field.
An ailing Linda Blake (Fr., Richland, Wa.) took
second place and Laura Widman (Sr., Colfax, Wa.), still plagued by
leg injuries, was seventh in the heptathlon, giving SPU 20 points
and an 11-point lead over its nearest rivals going into next
week's GNAC meet.
The Falcons' Chris Randolph (Fr., Lone Tree,
Co./Denver Christian) was runner-up in the men's decathlon and
teammate Jason Radel (Fr., Kalispell, Mt./Flathead) seventh.
Ayers-Stamper (Fr., LaCrosse, Wa.) broke the
meet heptathlon record with a personal-best score of 5024 points.
She won five of the seven events, establishing career-best marks
in three.
In Friday's final three events, Ayers-Stamper
long-jumped 17-8 1/4, threw the javelin 134-2 and ran the 800
meters in 2:27.93. Widman, plagued by hamstring and knee injuries
throughout the season, won the latter in 2:26.29. Blake,
recovering from the flu, scored 4163 points and Widman 3664.
Randolph, coming on strong in the final two of
his 10 events, overtook Western Oregon's Brandon Conroy for second
place. Randolph won the javelin with a PR fling of 149-6 and was
second in the 1500 at 4:32.61. Chris Peterson of Central
Washington won the decathlon with 6334 points. Randolph had a PR
total of 6242 and Conroy 6220. Radel scored 5294.
The Seattle Pacific women take a 20-9 lead over
both Western Oregon and Western Washington into the May 3
conference meet in Ellensburg. SPU, with 10 points, is second to
Central (14) in the men's.
The Falcons send a select group of athletes to
the Oregon Invitational Saturday in Eugene.
