April 25, 2003

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Apr. 25) Danielle Ayers-Stamper of Seattle Pacific University won the heptathlon title and helped give the Falcons an early jump on their fourth straight team championship at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference multi-event meet Friday at McArthur Field.

An ailing Linda Blake (Fr., Richland, Wa.) took second place and Laura Widman (Sr., Colfax, Wa.), still plagued by leg injuries, was seventh in the heptathlon, giving SPU 20 points and an 11-point lead over its nearest rivals going into next week's GNAC meet.

The Falcons' Chris Randolph (Fr., Lone Tree, Co./Denver Christian) was runner-up in the men's decathlon and teammate Jason Radel (Fr., Kalispell, Mt./Flathead) seventh.

Ayers-Stamper (Fr., LaCrosse, Wa.) broke the meet heptathlon record with a personal-best score of 5024 points. She won five of the seven events, establishing career-best marks in three.

In Friday's final three events, Ayers-Stamper long-jumped 17-8 1/4, threw the javelin 134-2 and ran the 800 meters in 2:27.93. Widman, plagued by hamstring and knee injuries throughout the season, won the latter in 2:26.29. Blake, recovering from the flu, scored 4163 points and Widman 3664.

Randolph, coming on strong in the final two of his 10 events, overtook Western Oregon's Brandon Conroy for second place. Randolph won the javelin with a PR fling of 149-6 and was second in the 1500 at 4:32.61. Chris Peterson of Central Washington won the decathlon with 6334 points.
