EUREKA, Calif. (Apr. 19) -- A string of 16 wins over two years was snapped as Willamette edged Seattle Pacific University in the varsity women's four Saturday at the Blue Heron Redwood Sprints on Humboldt Bay.

The Falcons did win the women's junior varsity, lightweight and novice fours to take fourth place overall in the team standings behind Willamette, host Humboldt State and California.

The SPU men, runners-up in the varsity four, light four and novice four were third after Cal and Willamette.

By finishing second, the women's varsity four crew experienced its first loss in five outings this season. The same four rowers had gone 12-0 as novices. Willamette won by a margin of 6.57 seconds.

Seattle Pacific's JV four remained undefeated, beating Mills by a boat-length, and the same crew came back to win the light four race by a bow over Willamette.

Races were contested under clear skies and on calm waters.

Next week the Falcons will compete at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Championships on Lake Stevens.
