BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Apr. 5) -- Behind the three
wins of Danielle Ayers-Stamper and two of Sarah Kraybill, Seattle
Pacific University held off host Western Washington to win its
fourth straight Vernacchia Team Classic women's title Saturday at
a cold, windy Civic Stadium.
SPU finished eight points ahead of the Vikings,
111-103. Western won the men's team title for the sixth straight
year, more than doubling the total of its two nearest competitors
in the seven-team field. Seattle Pacific, minus its top two
scorers, was fifth.
Ayers-Stamper (Fr., LaCrosse, Wa.) was named
the outstanding female athlete of the meet, as she won the long
jump (17 feet, 7½ inches) and the 100-meter hurdles (15.02
seconds) and shared first in the high jump (5-3).
She was also runner-up in the shot put with a
personal-best heave of 37-6¾ and third in the javelin
(121-10), accounting for 43points in all.
Kraybill (Sr., Seattle, Wa./Ballard) posted an
unusual double, taking first in both the 400 (58.40) and 1500
(4:49.3). She also anchored the 1600 relay which was second.
Ally Studer of Seattle Pacific cleared 11-11½
in the women's pole vault to establish a new meet record and lead
a 1-2-3 sweep. Allie Hedges (Fr., Richland, Wa.) was second with
an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of 11-7¾
while Amy Harris (Fr., Philomath, Or.) was third at 10-2.
Hedges becomes the team's sixth female
qualifier.
The Falcons also captured the top three spots
in the high jump. In addition to Ayers-Stamper, Linda Blake also
cleared 5-3 to tie for first and Dianna Grossglass (Fr., LaConner,
Wa.) was third (4-11).
Jennifer Pyeatt (Jr., Graham, Wa./Bethel) made
her outdoor debut by winning the shot put (39-4¼) and Jamie
Witt (So., Folsom, Ca.) picked up her second win in the 5000 this
season in 17:57.87.
For the men, Micah Kellcy (Sr., Lakewood,
Wa./Clover Park) was the top performer, placing second in the 400
hurdles (56.24) and third in the open 400 (50.94). Hurdler Paul
Mach raced only on relays while Chris Randolph did not compete.
The Falcons' Jason Radel and Laura Widman
compete at the WWU multi-event meet this week while the entire
team resumes competition next Friday at the Pelluer Invitational
in Cheney. |
