Gymnasts Break Floor Mark and Finish 3rd at MPSF Conference Meet
March 29, 2003

SACRAMENTO, Ca. (Mar. 29)—Corrie McDaniel danced her way to third place on floor to lead Seattle Pacific University to a school record floor exercise team total and its second highest all-time university team score. The Falcons finished in third place behind the host Sacramento State and San Jose State at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference Championships Saturday night at Hornet’s Nest.

Seattle Pacific’s 49.175 team floor total obliterated the previous school record. The old mark, 48.925, was set in 2002. The Falcons’ 193.000 is the second best all-time team tally in the school annals and was just shy of the Hornets’ 194.925 and the Spartans’ 194.500. Defending USA Gymnastics National Champion Air Force finished fourth with 192.050, UC Davis fifth with 189.650 and Alaska Anchorage sixth, earning187.300.

McDaniel (So., Lawrence, Ks.) tied her own second place all-time and career-high floor mark with a 9.925 on the mats. The sophomore finished in a four-way tie with Sacramento State’s Jenny Diamond, Air Force’s Jessa Liego and Shirla Choy of San Jose State.

Jennifer Christman (Jr., Fairfield, Ca.) had a career night for Seattle Pacific as well, notching a fifth place finish on vault with a 9.725. The junior also finished ninth on bars, scoring a 9.750, just a half-point off her career-high. Both were top SPU finishes on respective events.

On balance beam, Kristin Strid (Sr., Kingsburg, Ca.) flipped a 9.800 seventh place routine and teammate Rachael Anderson (Sr., Yakima, Wa.) posted a career-high 9.775, good for ninth place overall.

As a team, the Falcons posted season highs on floor, vault (48.125) and beam (48.525).

Individually, Sacramento and San Jose State’s Nirvana Zaher and Dani Albright tied for top honors on vault with 9.775, On bars, the Hornets’ Binta Coleman and the Spartans’ Shirla Choy tied for first with 9.900 and San Jose’s Amberly Klein won beam with 9.875. Albright finished at the top on floor with a 9.975.

Choy also won the all-around competition, scoring a 39.400 total for four events. McDaniel scored a 37.475 to finish tenth overall.

The Falcons compete at the USA Gymnastics National Meet in Denton, Texas, April 17-19, to finish out the 2003 season.

BEAM: 1) Klein, SJSU, 9.875; 2) (tie) Narasaki, CSUS, Todd, USAF, Albright, Choy, Greene, SJSU, 9.825.

FLOOR: 1) Albright, SJSU, 9.975; 2) Todd, USAF, 9.950; 3) (tie) McDaniel, SPU, Choy, SJSU, Liegl, USAF, Diamond, CSUS, 9.925.
