SEATTLE (Mar. 12) -- Gordy Presnell, who has
guided seattle Pacific University to an unbeaten regular season
and the No. 1 ranking in NCAA Division II, was voted the West
Regional Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches
Association.
Presnell, who also won the award in 1998, is
now a finalist for the national coach of the year, which will be
awarded Apr. 7, prior to the Final Four in Atlanta. The Falcons
are 27-0 and face Chico State in an NCAA first-round game Friday
night at Brougham Pavilion.
In addition, both SPU center Kelley Berglund
(Sr., 6-3, Port Angeles, Wa.) and point guard Kerie Hughes (Sr.,
5-6, Mount Vernon, Wa.) were named to the all-West Region team and
as finalists for the Kodak/WBCA All-America team. Berglund leads
the squad in scoring (13.5) and rebounding (8.4) while Hughes
averages 12.4 points and leads the team in assists (5.8).
