Going into Final Basketball Games, Falcons Looking Good
March 5, 2003

SEATTLE (Mar. 5) -- With just two games remaining in the basketball regular season, Seattle Pacific University finds itself it great shape with respect to the respective NCAA Division II tournaments.

The SPU men (15-10) are No. 6 in the West Region and play their final games at home; Thursday against Saint Martin's and Saturday versus Central Washington. The top eight teams in the region will advance to the playoffs, with the entire 64-team NCAA bracket to be announced Monday (Mar. 10) at 10 a.m. PST.

Cal State San Bernardino is the top men's team in the West. In addition to Seattle Pacific, other Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams in playoff contention are Humboldt State (No. 3) and Alaska Fairbanks (No. 5).

While the undefeated Falcon women (25-0) have been certain of a postseason bid for several weeks, they have yet to wrap-up the top seed in the West and, thus, earn the right to host the regional tourney. Seattle Pacific, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation for the fourth week in a row, is also No. 1 in the region but Cal State Bakersfield (24-1) is in hot pursuit.

Seattle Pacific, receiving all 25 first-place votes, was a unanimous choice for the top of the Div. II rankings. It hosts Western Oregon Thursday and Humboldt State Saturday to complete the regular season.

The site of the women's regional, to be held Mar. 14, 15 and 17, will be announced Sunday night (Mar. 9) at 7 p.m. PST.

Other GNAC women's teams among the top 10 in the West are Western Washington (No. 3), Central Washington (No. 5) and Northwest Nazarene (No. 6). Nationally, Bakersfield is No. 5 and Western Washington No. 24.
