Woodard Comes Off Bench to Lead Road Win for Falcons
March 1, 2003

SEATTLE (Mar. 1) -- Gene Woodard came off the bench for a season-high 19 points and Jason Chivers powered inside for 12 points and 12 rebounds as Seattle Pacific University once again revived its postseason hopes by beating Seattle University 84-70 at Connolly Center Saturday night.

Yusef Aziz (Sr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster) and Maurice Cato (Sr., 6-0, Fairfield, Ca.) each scored 14 points for the Falcons (11-5, 15-10), who remain second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference along with Alaska Fairbanks.

Seattle Pacific led virtually the entire game, widened the margin to 20 with nine minutes to go and sank 23 second-half free throws to snap a three-game road losing skid. The Falcons, who have two games remaining, had entered the week ranked No. 7 in the West Region. The top eight teams will earn NCAA Division II tournament berths.

Woodard (Sr., 6-4, Edmonds, Wa./O'Dea) scored 11 of his points in the second period and punctuated the victory with an uncontested dunk at the buzzer. He hit two short jumpers during a 7-1 burst which put the visitors ahead to stay, 38-22 shortly before halftime.

Chivers (So., 6-8, Palmdale, Ca.) asserted himself early, particularly on the offensive boards where he collected seven of his rebounds.

A 12-2 run midway through the second half gave SPU a comfortable cushion at 56-37. Jesse Keely (Sr., 6-7, Fircrest, Wa./Bellarmine), who contributed 12 points off the bench, had two of the baskets.

After shooting just 39 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, SPU connected on 13-23 second-half field goals. The Redhawks (9-7, 16-9) had difficulty penetrating inside and hit just 35 percent for the game, including 4-21 three-pointers. Jeffrey McDaniel of Seattle U. had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Leading season scorer Darnell Lyons was scoreless, missing all six field goal attempts.

Seattle Pacific went to the foul in 48 times in the foul-marred game. Four players exited with five personals, including three Redhawks.

SPU concludes the regular season at home with two games this week, beginning Thursday night against Saint Martin's.
