SPU Women Stay at No. 1 Nationally While Men Jump to 7th in West

SEATTLE (Feb. 26) -- With two weeks and four games remaining in the regular season, Seattle Pacific University remains No. 1 in both the NCAA Division II national and regional women's basketball polls while the Falcon men surged back into postseason contention.

For the third week in a row the unbeaten (23-0) SPU women sit atop the USA Today/ESPN women's coaches poll, earning all 22 first-place votes. Seattle Pacific can clinch the Great Northwest Athletic Conference crown during its trip to Alaska this week. It visits Alaska Anchorage Thursday night. California (Pa.) is No. 2 nationally.

Regionally, the Falcons are followed by Cal State Bakersfield (22-1), Western Washington (19-5) and Montana State Billings (18-6). The top team in the West will host the NCAA Regional tournament beginning Mar. 14.

In men's basketball, a couple of close home victories propelled Seattle Pacific (14-9) to seventh in the region. the top eight teams will receive postseason berths. SPU, which has been as high as No. 4, dropped out of the top 10 last week but has since beaten Humboldt State, the No. 3 team in the nation. The Falcons resume play Thursday night at Northwest Nazarene.

The final regional rankings will be release Mar. 5 with playoff brackets announced Mar. 9.
