SPU Men Go 4 Overtimes to Defeat No. 3 Humboldt State, 113-108
February 20, 2003

SEATTLE (Feb. 20) - Daniel Sandrin scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth overtime as Seattle Pacific University staged an improbable comeback to defeat No. 3-ranked Humbold t State 113-108 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Brougham Pavilion Thursday night.

The Falcons (9-4, 13-9) trailed by 10 in the second half of regulation and by seven in the third extra period but rallied and revived their playoff hopes by going on a 7-2 run to the final buzzer. Sandrin (Sr., 6-7, Bothell, Wa.) gave Seattle Pacific the lead for good, 108-106, on a drive. He later added another layup and two free throws.

Jesse Keely (Sr., 6-7, Fircrest, Wa./Bellarmine) came off the bench for a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds and Yusef Aziz (Sr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster) scored 20 before fouling out in the third overtime.

Austin Nichols of the Lumberjacks (12-3, 20-3) pumped in a school-record 46 points. Maurice Cato (Sr., 6-0, Fairfield, Ca.) of SPU tied a school mark with 14 assists. It was the longest SPU game in 29 years and matched the second-longest game ever.

Humboldt State led 60-50 with 13 minutes left in regulation and before Jeff Knudson capped a charge to give SPU a 77-74 edge with 3:335 to go. The game went to the first overtime on a free throw by Fred Hooks with 32 seconds left.

A driving 5-footer by Cato forced the third OT, during which the 'Jacks went ahead 98-91. But the Falcons responded by scoring the next seven points, tying it on Keely's layup with 11 seconds to go.

The Falcons struggled against a determined HSU defense in the first half, committing 10 turnovers and missing their first six three-pointers.

Twice the Lumberjacks went ahead by nine. Jeremy Robinson canned all four of his treys and Austin Nichols confounded defenders with 15 first-half points, to take a 42-36 lead into thebreak.

Keely came off the bench to snare six offensive rebounds and score 13 points while Chivers had 10 points.

SPU hosts Western Oregon Saturday night at 7.
