Top 20 Women's Hoop Showdown Set For Saturday at SPU
February 19, 2003

SEATTLE (Feb. 19) -- Undefeated Seattle Pacific University is due for perhaps its toughest test since going to the top of the NCAA Division II women's basketball rankings Saturday night. The Falcons will host No. 20 Western Washington at 5 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion.

SPU is No. 1 for the second week in a row after going to 21-0 by beating Central Washington, 80-69. Play resumes Thursday (5:30 p.m.) against Seattle University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.

Meanwhile, the rest of the top five received a slight shakeup as South Dakota State slipped from second to fourth with its second loss in as many weeks. California of Pennsylvania is now No. 2. Cal State Bakersfield, at No. 6, and Western Washington, which has won eight in a row and 14 of 15, are the only other West Region teams in the top 25.

In the NCAA regional rankings, Seattle Pacific maintained its lead over Bakersfield and Western. The top seed will host the regional tournament beginning Mar. 14.

Surprisingly, the Falcon men fell out of the West's top 10 following two road losses in Alaska. SPU had been No. 4 a week ago. The top eight teams will receive postseason berths. The Falcons host Humboldt State, the region's No. 2 team, Thursday at 7:30.
