SEATTLE (Feb. 15) -- Kelley Berglund (Sr., 6-3,
Port Angeles, Wa./ Washington State) recorded a 24-point,
12-rebound double-double to lead the Seattle Pacific University
women's basketball team past Central Washington 80-69 in a Great
Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Brougham
Pavilion. The Falcons are currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA
Division II national poll and first in the West Region.
Seattle Pacific (12-0, 21-0) extended its
program-record home winning streak to 29 games dating back to Jan.
18, 2001 and it overall unbeaten streak to 21 games. The game
attracted 1211 fans, marking the highest attendance in five years
for a women's game at the pavilion and the second most all-time.
The Wildcats (6-6, 11-8) came to within two
points of the Falcons with 8:45 remaining in the contest before
Kerie Hughes (Sr., 5-6, Mount Vernon, Wa./Mount Vernon) led a
spirited 12-4 run with five points and Stephanie Urrutia (Sr.,
5-9, Sunnyside, Wa./Sunnyside) converted a four- point play with a
three-pointer and a free-throw.
Berglund climaxed the Falcons lead to 12 points
with her final two points of the game with 26 seconds remaining.
She scored 13 of her 24 points in the second half, converting
11-of-16 points in the contest, sealing her seventh double-double
of the season.
Hughes finished the contest with 19 points and
five assists, including three conversions from behind the arc.
Urrutia finished with 14 points and a game-high six assists.
The first half was a see-saw battle, featuring
a combined 26 turnovers and 20 personal fouls. After gaining their
first lead of the game at the 13:50 mark at 14-13, the Falcons
gave it right back with four turnovers in less than three minutes.
The Wildcats capitalized on the Falcons first
half mishaps to go on a 12-2 run which extended their lead to a
game-high nine points with 9:48 remaining until the break. SPU
responded with a 16-2 run spanning just four minutes and including
three-pointers by Hughes and Urrutia.
The first frame came to a close with yet
another Central counter, this time tying the contest at 39 apiece
with 31 seconds remaining before Hughes sank two free-throws to
the give the Falcons a two-point edge at the half. Seattle Pacific
hosts Seattle University this Thursday, Feb. 20.
