DAVIS, Ca. (Feb. 15)-Corrie McDaniel tied for
first place on vault and won balance beam en route to a second
place finish in the all-around competition as Seattle Pacific
University notched a 188.600 to 187.525 victory over rival UC
Davis in a women's gymnastics meet Saturday night at Recreation
Hall.
The dual victory was SPU's second of 2003, the
first coming in a second place finish at San Jose State Friday
night (Feb. 14). In that meeting, the Falcons' finished ahead of
defending USA Gymnastics National Champion Air Force Academy.
McDaniel (So., Lawrence, Ks.) scored a 9.6 on
vault, tying Davis' Vanessa Baume. The sophomore all-arounder
later nailed her beam routine for a season high 9.8. McDaniel's
all-around total was a 37.550, just behind the Aggies' Nicole
Doherty's 37.950.
Melissa Stanton finished second on the uneven
bars with a 9.725, just .75 shy of Davis' Lynn Schwaebe. Other
Falcons who ended up on the awards podium at night's end were
Cindy Reed (Fr., Antioch, Ca.) on vault and Kristin Strid (Sr.,
Kingsburg, Ca.) on bars. Both Reed and Strid won third place
honors, scoring 9.350 and 9.625, respectively.
The Aggies' Jenna Mayfield danced top honors on
floor exercise to lead a Davis sweep, with a 9.650.
Seattle Pacific returns to Seattle for another
dual meet with the Aggies on Feb. 21. Official start time is
scheduled for 7 o'clock.
