No. 2 Women Await Possible Rankings Shake-Up, Men Remain in West Region Rankings
February 5, 2003

SEATTLE (Feb. 5) -- Seattle Pacific University begins a second month as the nation's No. 2-ranked women's basketball team but a shake-up of the top seems certain before next week's poll.

The Falcons (18-0) have an opportunity to clinch a third straight 20-win season but must do so on the road this week. They visit Saint Martin's Thursday and Northwest Nazarene Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference games.

Top-ranked South Dakota State (19-0), the only other unbeaten team in NCAA Division II, travels to No. 5 North Dakota Thursday and hosts No. 7 North Dakota State Saturday.

Both the SPU women's and men's teams are currently on track to earn NCAA postseason bids. The women retain the No. 1 spot in the West Region poll which determines playoff berths. The men jumped five places to No. 5. The top eight teams will qualify for the regional tournament next month.

Seattle Pacific maintained its lead over Cal State Bakersfield in the women's poll. Western Washington was third, Northwest Nazarene fifth and Central Washington sixth.

Two convincing home victories boosted the hopes of the Falcon men (11-7). Cal State San Bernardino took over from Humboldt State at No. 1.
