Western Foul Shooting Spells Loss for SPU Men
January 11, 2003

SEATTLE (Jan. 11) - Maurice Tyree scored 20 points and Jason Burrell hit six free throws in the final five minutes as Western Washington dealt Seattle Pacific University its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference defeat, 83-76, Saturday night in Brougham Pavilion.

The Vikings (2-1, 8-4), playing without top scorer Mike Palm for the final seven minutes, won on the Falcons' (2-1, 6-6) home floor for only the third time in their last 13 visits by connecting on 29 of 35 free throws and 60 percent (27-45) of their field goals.

Yusef Aziz (Sr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./foster) led SPU with 16 points and seven rebounds and Jesse Keely (Sr., 6-7, Fircrest, Wa./Bellarmine) came off the bench for 15. It marked Seattle Pacific's fourth home conference loss in the last 44 games and for the first time in five years it has lost back-to-back home contests. Rocky Mountain defeated SPU in a non-conference game last week.

Western overpowered SPU with a 42-15 run midway through the game, taking a 1`6-point lead into the final 11 minutes. But the Falcons rallied as Palm went to the bench with his fourth foul, trimming the deficit to 66-60 with 8:09 left. Palm returned briefly before drawing his fifth and Keely's two foul shots brought SPU within 70-67.

The Vikings staved off the comeback from the foul stripe, making 11 of 12 down the stretch while the Falcons suddenly went cold from the field. They shot just 35 percent in the second half and made just 15 trips-20 fewer than WWU-to the foul line.

Tyree was 9-13 from the floor. Palm still finished with 16 points. Burrell, who was 11-12 at the line overall, and Grant Dykstra each added 13. Burell, committed 10 of the Vikings' 24 turnovers.

The Falcons parlayed Western turnovers into a 31-20 lead midway through the first half before the Vikings ended the hair with a run of their own. Aziz ran the break for eight early points and a 17-8 advantage, then a three-point play by Keely widened the lead to 11 with 7:31 left in the half.

Western retaliated with a 17-8 spree with Tyree scoring five of his 15 first-half points. The Vikings shot 62 percent (16-26) in the first period, SPU 53 percent (17-32) but the visitors' lead was largely due to their 11-13 free throw shooting.

SPU remains home next week, beginning with Alaska Anchorage Thursday night at 7.
