SEATTLE (Jan. 9) -- Three members of the
Seattle Pacific University women's basketball team notched
double-doubles in points and rebounds in a 95-75 victory over
Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game
Thursday night at Brougham Pavilion. The Falcons are currently
ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II national poll and first in
the West Region.
The Falcons (12-0, 3-0) tied the program's best
ever start set by the 1997- 98 team that reached the Elite Eight.
Seattle Pacific also extended its program-record home winning
streak to 25 games.
Seattle Pacific strung together a 51-14 run
over the Crusaders (7-3, 1-1) at the conclusion of the first half
and the beginning of second to build as much as a 39-point lead
with under ten minutes to play.
Carli Smith (Fr., 5-11, Spokane, Wa./Valley
Christian) led the Falcons with a career-high 19 rebounds and 17
points, while Valerie Gustafson (Jr., 6- 0, Olympia, Wa./Black
Hills) and Kelley Berglund (Sr., 6-3, Port Angeles, Wa./Washington
State) each finished with 16-point, 10-rebound double- doubles.
The Falcons outrebounded the Crusaders 62-to-36
as Nazarene converted 25 of 80 shot attempts for 31 percent.
Neither team gained more than a five-point
advantage through the first 14 minutes of play. The Falcons broke
the game's seventh tie with just under six minutes to play in the
first half before embarking on an 18-6 first-half- ending run that
signaled the turning point in the contest.
As a team, the Falcons finished the first half
with a remarkable 59 percent shooting percentage, fueled mostly by
lay-ups in transition. Meanwhile, the Crusaders stayed close
through most of the first half on five three- point conversions,
including three by Jenny Binford, even though the team shot just
35 percent from the floor.
Seattle Pacific resumes its conference schedule
