Unbeaten SPU Women Remain No. 2 in Nation, No. 1 in West
January 8, 2003

SEATTLE (Jan. 8) -- Seattle Pacific University remains at No. 2 in the NCAA Division II women's basketball national rankings this week but the top four spots figure to get juggled next week.

The Falcons (11-0) again earned one first-place vote but still trail South Dakota State (12-0) in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll. SPU hosts Northwest Nazarene (7-2) Thursday night at 7. South Dakota State, which received 23 of 25 first-place votes, visits No. 4 North Dakota State Friday.

This is the first year Seattle Pacific has broken into the top five of the rankings. It began the season at No. 15 before defeating North Dakota State 70-67 on a neutral floor. The Falcons have since beaten three other nationally-ranked teams, including defending NCAA champion Cal Poly Pomona Dec. 27.

Western Washington is the only other Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams included in this week's top 25. The Vikings (7-2) are 17th.

In the regional ratings compiled by the NCAA, Seattle Pacific is atop the West, followed by Sonoma State (Ca.), Montana State Billings and Central Washington.

The SPU men cling to the 10th spot in the West Region, falling five places after losing four of their last five. The Falcons face Western Washington at home Saturday night. Humboldt State is No. 1 in the nation and region. The next region polls are scheduled for release Jan. 22.
