No. 2 SPU Women Thump Cal State L.A. Behind Beaumont's 35 Points

BELLINGHAM (Dec. 28) -- Michelle Beaumont (So., 5-11, Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) scored a career-high 35 points to lead the Seattle Pacific University women's basketball team past Cal State L.A., 84-52, in the final day of the Northwest Athletic Conference Challenge Classic on Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium.

Beaumont's 35-point performance is the most by any Falcon since 1984 and places her tied for eighth on the all-time single-game scoring list.

The Falcons (2-0, 10-0), ranked No. 2 in the latest WBCA/NCAA Division II Top 25, embarked on a 21-7 run over Cal State L.A. (2-4) midway through the first half and shot 63 percent to build a commanding lead which they maintained for the remainder of the contest. Nineteen of Beaumont's 35 points came in the first half.

Beaumont connected on her first nine field goal attempts and first eight free throws, and had 34 points with eight minutes left in the game. By game's end, she was 11-for-17 from the floor, including four-of-seven from behind the three-point arc, and converted nine-of-ten free-throw attempts.

Beaumont, a second-year shooting guard, is replacing Kristin Poe (Jr., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw) in the starting lineup after the junior forward went down with a knee injury that will keep her sidelined 4-6 weeks. Seattle Pacific led by as much as 43 points in the second half, holding a 77-34 edge with eight minutes left before the Eagles finished on an 18-7 surge.

Valerie Gustafson (Jr., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) was the only other Seattle Pacific player in double-figures, finishing with 10 points.

Kelley Berglund (Sr., 6-3, Port Angeles, Wa./Port Angeles) reeled in 11 rebounds to lead the Falcons on the glass and Stephanie Urrutia (Sr., 5-9, Sunnyside, Wa./Sunnyside) finished with a career-high nine assists.

The Falcons return to Brougham Pavilion next Saturday, Jan. 3, to face Lewis- Clark State.
