SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 17) -- Cold shooting plagued
Seattle Pacific University for the second game in many nights as
Pittsburg State (Ks.) beat the Falcons 70-64 in the second round
of the River City Shootout Tuesday night in a men's basketball
game at Greehey Arena.
Cedric Brooks scored 20 points and Jamey
Richardson had 10 of his 16 in the second half and added 14
rebounds for the Gorillas (8-1), who charged in front early and
then protected a slim lead for the final 14 minutes.
Maurice Cato (Sr., 6-0, Fairfield, Ca.) pumped
in 15 points for SPU (5-3), which lost back-to-back games for the
first time in two seasons.
Yusef Aziz (Sr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster)
managed just nine points. Jason Chivers (So., 6-8, Palmdale, Ca.)
finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Repeating the trend of Monday's loss to
Missouri Western, the Falcons fell behind early and could not
sustain a rally due to sub-40 percent shooting. Richardson's layup
pushed Pittsburg's lead to 18-4 after the first 12 minutes.
Chivers, who scored all of his points in the
first half, fueled a comeback which brought Seattle Pacific within
31-30 at intermission. A three-point play by Cato gave SPU its
second and final lead at 42-41.
A Richardson jumper quickly restored the lead
and later his two free throws widened the gap to 61-54 with 2:55
left. The Falcons, who were 25 of 67 from the field (37 percent)
and 11 of 22 from the foul line, got no closer than four the rest
of the way.
Pittsburg hit 57 percent from the field in the
second half and 44 percent (24-54) for the game. The Gorillas were
17-21 at the line, including 6-6 by Richardson, who along with
Brooks had three blocked shots.
The Falcons, who have not lost three straight
since midway through the 1997-98 season, complete their road trip
Thursday night at Nevada.
