Falcons' Dominance of Redhawks Ends with 70-64 Loss
November 30, 2002

SEATTLE (Nov. 30) - Unable to overcome cold shooting and a determined foe, Seattle Pacific University's seven-year domination of Seattle University ended with a 70-64 win by the Redhawks in a non-conference men's basketball game at Brougham Pavilion Saturday.

Jefferey McDaniel's putback with 12 seconds remaining sealed the outcome, snapping a 12-game win streak in the series by SPU. His basket made it 68-64 and A.J. Brooks added two late free throws for the final margin.

Both teams begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday. The Falcons visit Central Washington while the Redhawks host Alaska Fairbanks. The two teams will meet twice more this season.

The Falcons (3-1), who trailed by 10 points with under eight minutes left, closed to 64-63 on Yusef Aziz's three-pointer with 2:05 left.

Aziz (Sr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster) led all players with 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Darnell Lyon topped Seattle U. (3-1) with 13 points, while McDaniel, Nic Lano and Jelani Williams each had 12. The Redhawks, who had not beaten their crosstown rivals since Jan. 31, 1995, shot 49 percent from the field and made 10 of 13 free throws.

Seattle Pacific began each period with brief spurts but lost the lead for good when Seattle U. went on a 15-3 run. A leaning 10-footer by McDaniel made it 58-48 with 7:36 left.

Fifteen of the Falcons' 23 field goals were from outside the arc, including the last eight of the game. Maurice Cato (Sr., 6-0, Fairfield, Ca.) hit back-to-back treys before Aziz connected from the top of the key during a late 9-2 rally but SPU could pull no closer. It was the team's first loss under new coach Jeff Hironaka.

The Falcons made 15-27 three-pointers but only 8-33 field goals inside and earned only seven foul shots. Jeff Knudson (Fr., Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak) hit 4-5 treys and had 12 points while Cato finished with 11.

Beginning in the first half, Seattle U. controlled the interior, denying penetration and forcing the Falcons into nine first-half turnovers . The Falcons remained close by hitting 6-9 three-pointers and throwing a trapping defense at the Redhawks toward the end of the half.

Seattle Pacific's next five games are on the road. It returns home Jan. 3 to host UC Santa Cruz in the Oak Harbor Freight Lines Classic.
