SEATTLE (Nov. 29) -- Stephanie Urrutia (Jr.,
5-9, Sunnyside, Wa./ Sunnyside) recorded team-highs of 17 points
and eight assists to lead the Seattle Pacific University women's
basketball team past Westmont College 95-56 at the Falcon Classic
Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons are currently ranked No. 15 in the
WBCA/USA Today national poll.
The Falcons (4-0) never trailed the Warriors
(4-4) and blew the game open on a 21-6 run to finish the first
half. SPU shot even better in the second half, converting 21 of 37
shots for 57 percent. Thirty Westmont turnovers led to 21 SPU
steals and countless transition baskets, allowing the Falcons to
build a commanding lead that culminated at 40 points with five
minutes remaining.
Center Kelley Berglund (Jr., 6-3, Port Angeles,
Wa./Washington State) and Michelle Beaumont (Fr., 5-11,
Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) also reached double-figures for the
Falcons with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Beaumont converted
three of four three-point
attempts.
Kristin Poe (So., 5-8, Enumclaw, Wa./Enumclaw)
led the Falcons on the glass with nine rebounds and on defense
with seven steals.
Becky Gibb was the only Westmont player in
double-figures with 16 points.
Western plays Westmont College and PLU squares
off against Seattle Pacific in the second day of the Falcon
Classic tomorrow at the pavilion.

SEATTLE (Nov. 29) -- Megan Quarterman scored 19
points and Susan Rodgers blocked five shots to lead No. 10-ranked
Western Washington University past Pacific Lutheran 58-47 at
Seattle Pacific University's Falcon Classic at Brougham Pavilion
Friday night.
The two teams exchanged leads in a
poor-shooting first half before the Lutes (1-1) ran off five
consecutive unanswered points to take a five-point advantage into
the half. The Vikings (2-1) opened the second frame on a 7-0 run
to take command of the game for good while the Lutes struggled on
the offensive end, shooting just 19 percent. After a 31-31 tie at
the 16:12 mark, the Vikings never again trailed in the contest,
leading by as much as 14 points before settling for an 11-point
victory.
Quarterman shot 8-for-12 for the Vikings from
the floor and added two steals and two blocks to her line. Rodgers
was the other Western player in double-figures with 10. Kristy
Eggen handed out a game-high four assists and four steals. The
Vikings shot 37 percent in the game.
Courtney Johnson blocked six shots, scored 12
points and recorded 10 rebounds to lead the Lutes. Aundi Kustera
also reached the double-figure mark with a team-high 13 points. As
a team, PLU committed 29 turnovers and shot just 30 percent from
the floor. Western plays Westmont College and PLU squares off
against Seattle Pacific in the second day of the Falcon Classic
tomorrow at the pavilion.
