Keely, Aziz Help Seattle Pacific Men Remain Unbeaten
November 25, 2002

SEATTLE (Nov. 25) - Jesse Keely scored 13 points, hauled down eight rebounds and hit two key free throws with 21 seconds remaining as Seattle Pacific University defeated Warner Pacific 71-66 in a non-conference men's basketball game at Brougham Pavilion Monday night.

Yusef Aziz (Sr., 6-4, Seattle, Wa./Foster) led the Falcons to their third win in as many games, scoring 19 points and adding five assists. Maurice Cato (Sr., 6-0, Fairfield, Ca.) had 11 points.

Matt Segrin of Warner Pacific topped all players with 21 points, hitting 7 of 11 shots from the floor. Nick Hudson had 17 points-12 on three-pointers-and Demarcus Best 15 plus six assists.

Although Seattle Pacific (3-0) led the entire game and by as many as 13 in the second period, it could not put away the previously unbeaten Knights (5-1), who made a late run to cut the deficit to just 69-66 on Hudson's top-of-the-key trey with 33 seconds to go.

On the next SPU possession, Keely (Sr., 6-7, Fircrest, Wa./Bellarmine) went inside and was fouled en route to the hoop. His two free throws provided the final margin. The Falcons missed eight of 16 from the foul line but shot 49 percent from the field (28-57) and finished with a slight edge in bouth rebounds (34-30) and turnovers (12-14).

Keely, whose scoring total was a career-high, converted all four of his field goals and grabbed three offensive boards. He also made two steals.

Segrin scored 16 of his points after intermission. He made all seven of his free throws and WPC was 13-15 overall.

SPU reeled off the game's first seven points but the Knights regrouped and pulled back to 15-13 by the 12:31 mark. But then they made a 14-2 run to regain command, 29-15. Aziz, who hit five of his first seven field goals and 9-13 overall, got things started inside and Jeff Knudson drained a deep three-pointer. Seattle Pacific took advantage of six first-half turnovers by Warner Pacific, scoring 12 points.

SPU returns to action Saturday afternoon at 2 when it hosts Seattle University.
