BELLINGHAM, WA. (Nov. 23) -- In just her second
collegiate game, Mandy Wood (Fr., 5-6, Port Angeles, Wa./Port
Angeles) recorded team-highs of 16 points and seven assists off
the bench to lead the Seattle Pacific University women's
basketball team past Colorado Christian 93-44 at the 6th annual
WWU/Lynda Goodrich Classic at Sam Carver Gymnasium. The Falcons
are currently ranked No. 15 in the USA Today/WBCA national poll.
The Falcons (2-0) broke away from the Cougars
(0-2) beginning at the 13:30 mark in the first half when they
embarked on a 35-5 run and at one point held their opponents
scoreless for seven minutes.
As a team, SPU shot 60 percent from the floor
on 39-65 shooting and out-rebounded the Cougars 34-26. The Falcons
recorded their largest margin of victory since Nov. 20, 2001, when
SPU beat Cascade College by 59 points.
The SPU bench outscored the starting five
52-to-41, led by Wood who finished the game with three
three-pointers. Michelle Beaumont (So., 5-11, Bellingham,
Wa./Sehome) and Carli Smith (Fr., Spokane, Wa./Valley Christian)
also reached double-figures off the bench with 11 points apiece.
Beaumont also converted three three-point attempts.
Kelley Berglund (Sr., 6-3, Port Angeles,
Wa./Washington State) was the only Falcon starter in
double-figures with 11 points and added a team-high eight
rebounds. Berglund was named MVP of the tourney, and was joined on
the all-tournament team by guard Kerie Hughes.
Valerie Gustafson (So., 6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black
Hills) had her second-straight four-steal game for the Falcons.
SPU handed out 28 assists as a team and
recorded just 19 turnovers, compared to 10 assists and 35
turnovers for the Cougars.
SPU crosses Lake Washington this Wednesday to
face Northwest College and then returns home for the Falcon
Classic Nov. 29-30 at Brougham Pavilion.
