PORTLAND, OR. (Nov. 14) -- Center Kelley
Berglund (Sr., 6-3, Port Angeles, Wa./Washington State) poured in
20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Seattle Pacific
University women's basketball team past Division I University of
Portland 72-63 in an exhibition game Thursday night at the Chiles
Center in Portland. The Falcons are currently ranked No. 15 in the
USA Today/WBCA national poll released last week.
The Falcons pounded the Pilots on the glass
with a 50-37 rebounding advantage and sank 17 free-throw attempts,
compared to just eight for their opponents.
Berglund shot 7-for-12 from the floor and
six-for-seven from the charity stripe. Valerie Gustafson (So.,
6-0, Olympia, Wa./Black Hills) was the only other Falcon in
double-figures with 10 points and added a team-high five steals.
Freshman Carli Smith (Fr., 5-11, Spokane,
Wa./Valley Christian) added eight points off the bench for SPU in
just 13 minutes of court time. Kristin Poe (Jr., 5-8, Enumclaw,
Wa./Enumclaw) handed out a team-high six assists. SPU begins its
regular season next weekend at the Lynda Goodrich Classic in
Bellingham with a game against No. 3-ranked North Dakota State.
