Janzen Caps Career With Two Goals in Season-Ending Win
November 9, 2002

SEATTLE (Nov. 9) -- Cory Janzen capped his career with two goals and fellow senior Adrian Cravalho posted the shutout as Seattle Pacific University completed its men's soccer season with a 5-0 win over Humboldt State in the rain at Interbay Stadium Saturday night.

David Smith, Ross Vaillancourt and Jeremy Bonner also scored for the Falcons, who finished at 11-6-2, including a 7-1-1 mark at home. Humboldt State finished the season on a five-game losing skid and 3-15-1.

Janzen (Sr., Langley, B.C.), who started 80 of 81 career games, opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, hitting an open net from 10 yards after Smith (So., Corvallis, Or.) cut a short ball back from the endline.

Smith put SPU in front 2-0 with a glancing header from a cross by Brent Egbert (Jr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome). Egbert finished with two assists. It was Smith's seventh goal.

Two quick strikes sealed the Lumberjacks' fate early in the second half as Valliancourt (Fr., Bedford, N.H.) and Janzen headed home balls 55 seconds apart. Vaillancourt's was from point-blank range following a flick-on by Mike Pardini (Sr., Pasco, Wa.) and Jazen's seventh goal of the year came from a Michael Brkich (So., Vancouver, B.C.) corner kick at 51:48.

Bonner (Fr., Sammamish, Wa./Eastlake) got the game's final goal in the 78th minute from an assist by Tom Funk (Fr., Orland Park, Il.).

Grant Falco (Sr., Veradale, Wa.), the Falcons' fourth graduating senior, led his team with four shots.

Seattle Pacific kept Humboldt's defense under siege throughout, with 27 shots and 16 corner kicks. Cravalho (Sr., Mililani, Hi.) was required to make only one save on two HSU shots. The victory was Cliff McCrath's 541st. He will need four more next season to become the all-time collegiate coaching leader, surpassing San Francisco retired coach Steve Negoesco.
