SEATTLE (Nov. 6) - Seattle Pacific University
suffered its first home defeat of the season as Gus Zadra's
second-half goal gave Western Washington a 1-0 win in a Great
Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at Interbay
Stadium Wednesday night.
The Vikings' (3-0-0/14-4-1) victory, their
sixth in a row, sets-up a showdown with Seattle University for the
GNAC championship Saturday in Bellingham. The Falcons
(2-2-0/10-6-2) had been unbeaten (6-0-1) in seven previous home
games.
Zadra's goal, his fourth of the season, was
created by Paul Nissley's 22-yard free kick in the 71st minute.
Nissley bent his low drive around a five-man defensive wall and
Zadra, meeting it in stride, redirected it into the net from 8
yards.
Ben Dragavon made three saves in goal to earn
his seventh shutout for Western, but Seattle Pacific's best
chances were either squandered or caromed off the woodwork.
With the game scoreless and 25 minutes
remaining, Grant Falco was sprung by a Nick Letts pass and fired
from 16 yards but Dragavon got enough of a hand on it to steer it
off the left post. On the resulting corner kick by Michael Brkich,
a Letts header skipped off the crossbar.
Finally, with approximately two minutes to go,
David Smith dribbled around Dragavon but neither he nor Letts
could put the final touch on the ball with an open net from 6
yards.
SPU finished with a 10-9 edge in shots and 8-1
in corners.
James Ward made four saves for Seattle Pacific,
including a diving stop of Ian Weinberg from 15 yards in the 19th
minute.
It was the second win for Western at Interbay
in two years following a 30-year drought in the series.
SPU hosts Humboldt State to close out the
regular season Saturday night at 7.
