Falcons Men Held to 1-1 Tie by Redhawks
November 1, 2002

SEATTLE (Nov. 1) - Both Seattle Pacific and Seattle University's postseason hopes may have been dashed after the two men's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 tie in a non-conference game Friday night at Interbay Stadium.

Cory Janzen's (Sr., Langley, B.C.) second-half equalizer was all the Falcons (10-5-2) had to show for their 110 minutes of domination. They out-shot the Redhawks (10-5-2) 23-7 and finished with a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Seattle U., which scored on its first shot, withstood constant pressure and settled for sporadic, albeit effective, counterattacks. Goalie Brandon Sewell Jr., Federal Way, Wa./Kennedy) made five saves, including a flailing dive to his right midway through the second overtime period to thwart Grant Falco (Sr., Veradale, Wa.).

Nick Letts (Fr., Dublin, Ca.), who had figured in seven goals in the previous five games, set-up the Falcons' first score, rounding the right side of the defense, beating two defenders along the endline and cutting the ball back to the top of the box. Janzen settled it, then pounded an 18-yard drive into the left corner in the 64th minute. It was his fifth goal of the season.

The Redhawks wasted no time going in front, with Andy Stromberg (Jr., Port Orchard, Wa.) running down the middle to finish Matt Hulen's (Sr., Woodinville, Wa.) pass first-time into the net from 6 yards in the 3rd minute. After that, SPU goalie James Ward (So., Salem, Or.) was rarely busy.

The Falcons' Jeremy Yerkes (So. Gresham, Or.), off a corner, nearly got a tying goal in the 15th minute. His drive was blocked on the goal line by a defender, and after rolling along the line, was then cleared by a second Redhawk. Officials stated after the game that the ball was on the line but not complete over.

Late in the half, both Brent Egbert and Letts launched crisp shots which Sewell did well to save. The Falcons finished the period with a 7-0 advantage in corners and 12-5 in shots.

Each team has two games remaining in the regular season. SPU, still unbeaten (6-0-1) at home, hosts Western Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Wednesday night. Seattle U. extended its unbeaten string in the series to four games (3-0-1) and hosts Humboldt State, also on Wednesday.
