SEATTLE, Wa. (Oct. 30)-Katy Nydam gathered in a
rebound off a missed shot in the second overtime period and booted
the game winner to lift Seattle Pacific University over Western
Washington University 1-0 in overtime, in a women's Great
Northwest Athletic Conference soccer match Wednesday night at
Interbay Stadium.
Nydam's (Fr., Oak Harbor, Wa.) golden shot puts
Seattle Pacific's unbeaten streak at nine games, and eases the
Falcons into the driver's seat to win the GNAC title with two
games left to play in regular season. The Falcons have won their
last seven matches in a row.
At 102:02, Michelle Sanders (So., Centralia,
Wa.) fielded a cross off the foot of Michelle Everson (Fr.,
Tacoma, Wa.) and toe-poked a shot at Viking keeper Shaye Anderson.
Sanders' toe-poke bounced off the diving keeper's chest and rolled
to Nydam who trapped the ball and nailed a shot from six yards out
into the back of the Western net to end the match.
Although Western Washington (7-4-0/9-8-1)
peppered seven shots at Falcon goalie Jennifer Hull (So., Eugene,
Or./Sheldon), the Falcons answered with 11 of their own. Nydam's
score sealed up the SPU defense's fifth shut out.
Seattle Pacific was granted 10 corner kicks to
the Vikings' four and both Hull and Anderson made five saves
apiece. Sanders, who assisted on the golden goal, leads the
Falcons in points (28) and in four matches against Western
Washington over the course of her two-year career, has three goals
and four assists. The two teams went to overtime in both meetings
in 2002.
The Falcons (7-3-0/11-4-2) play their last
match at Interbay against Central Washington on Saturday
afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. The regular season
concludes November 5, at Seattle University, who is also in the
running for a GNAC title.
