Yerkes, Letts Strike Twice as Falcons Avenge Loss, 6-0
October 29, 2002

SEATTLE (Oct. 29) - Nick Letts and Jeremy Yerkes each scored twice and added an assist as Seattle Pacific University revived its playoff hopes with a 6-0 defeat of Simon Fraser in a non-conference men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium Tuesday night.

Michael Brkich and Ross Vaillancourt scored first-half goals for the Falcons (10-5-1), who avenged their worst loss, a 5-1 drubbing in Burnaby, B.C. last month. They remain undefeated (6-0-0) at home going into Friday night's game with Seattle University.

The Clansmen (11-3-0), ranked No. 9 among NAIA schools, had a five-game win streak snapped and were held scoreless for the first time this season.

Seattle Pacific immediately put the Clan on their heels, striking nine shots in the first 25 minutes. Yet it was a penalty kick by Brkich (So., Vancouver, BC) which finally broke the scoring ice at 26:07. Brkich, who had two assists, helped set-up Vaillancourt's (Fr., Bedford, NH) goal with a corner kick eight minutes later.

With under four minutes left in the half, Yerkes (So., Gresham, Or.) took a first-time feed from David Smith (So., Corvallis, Or.) and curled a 12-yard shot inside the right post for a 3-0 cushion. Yerkes added his team-leading ninth goal of the season on a near-post blast in the 57th minute. He has scored in each of the six home games this season.

Letts (Fr., Dublin, Ca.) headed in a cross from Brkich for his first goal and closed out the scoring in the 62nd minute by flicking Smith's driven ball from outside the box. Letts has scored four goals and had three assists in the last five games.

Smith came off the bench for three assists.

Goalie James Ward (So., Salem, Or.) posted his fifth shutout by making five saves. Seattle Pacific finished with a 24-6 advantage in shots and 13-0 in corner kicks.

SPU clinched its 32nd straight winning season-extending an NCAA Division II record-and has now won six of its last eight.
