POMONA, Calif. (Oct. 21) -- Grant Falco's goal,
his second of the game, in the second period of sudden death
overtime lifted Seattle Pacific University to a 3-2 win over Cal
Poly Pomona in a non-conference men's soccer game Monday night at
Kellogg Field.
The Falcons (9-4-1), who also got a goal from
David Smith (So., Corvallis, Or.), won for the fifth time in the
last six games to set-up a pivotal Wednesday night showdown at
7th-ranked Cal State Bakersfield, winner of 11 straight.
The outcome also leaves Cliff McCrath only five
away from becoming collegiate soccer's all-time coaching victory
leader. McCrath now has 539. San Francisco's Steve Negoesco
retired with 543. Seattle Pacific has five regular season games
remaining.
Sixty-three seconds into the second overtime,
Falco (Sr., Veradale, Wa./University) ran down the middle to
finish a pass from midfielder Nick Letts (Fr., Dublin, Ca.), who
had rounded the defense on the left wing before dribbling goalward
along the endline. Falco scored his seventh goal of the season
from 5 yards.
The game's first four goals were scored during
an 18-minute span of the second half. Falco's first score at 62:27
wiped-out a brief Broncos lead. In the 66th minute, Smith headed
in a cross from Christian Scholze (Fr., Federal Way, Wa./Decatur)
to put SPU ahead 2-1. It was the sixth goal for Smith, who
recently returned after missing six games with a fractured jaw.
Cal Poly Pomona (7-7-1), which had won four in
a row, sent the game into overtime on a free kick by Edwin
Portillo in the 75th minute. Goalkeeper Garrett Williams made 11
saves for the Broncos, who were out-shot 17-9.
