Falcon Women Net Five Goals in Win over Western Oregon
October 19, 2002

SEATTLE, Wa. (Oct. 19)-Michelle Sanders scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart as Seattle Pacific University scored five goals in all to hand first place Western Oregon University a 5-1, loss in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (9-4-2, 5-3-0), riding the cusp of a seven-match unbeaten streak, scored first in the match when Katy Nydam (Fr., Oak Harbor, Wa.) fielded a looping pass from teammate Shannon Lovejoy (Fr., Seattle, Wa./Seattle Prep.) 40 yards in front of the Wolves' goal. Nydam ran onto Lovejoy's lob and beat two defenders and Western Oregon goalie Moani Mundo on a 16-yard chip shot at 19:07.

Lovejoy followed her assist up with a goal at 41:26. The freshman headed in a Michelle Everson (Fr., Tacoma, Wa./Stadium) free kick to make it 2-0 Falcons, before Western Oregon's Jeanie Thompsen lofted a 25-yard strike from center of the field over the top of SPU keeper Erin Pierce (Fr., Milwaukie, Or./Rex Putnam) to bring the Wolves within one (61:50).

At 80:28 with the score Falcons 2, Wolves 1, midfielder Sarah Melby (So., Mukilteo, Wa./Kamiak/Idaho) fielded a pass from Nydam 25 yards in front of Western Oregon's goal. The sophomore beat one defender and blasted a left-footed strike over the top of Mundo into the net to kick-start a Seattle Pacific rally (80:28).

Less than two minutes later at 82:04, Sanders scored her first goal as she went one on one with Mundo and beat the keeper to the left post. Less than a minute later (82:52), Sanders struck again: a ten-yard shot that hit the back of the Wolves' net off another Nydam assist.

Seattle Pacific out shot the Wolves 13-9 and keeper Pierce saved six balls. Mundo finished the afternoon with a half-dozen saves as well. The Falcons were granted nine corner kicks to Western Oregon's 3.

Western Oregon is currently in first place in the GNAC, with SPU close on its heels. The Falcons play at Northwest Nazarene next Saturday (October 26). Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00AM. Seattle Pacific returns to Interbay to play Western Washington on October 30.
