Letts, Yerkes Pace Falcons to Another Men's Soccer Home Win
October 17, 2002

SEATTLE (Oct. 17) - Jermey Yerkes and Nick Letts each figured in a pair of goals during the final 21 minutes as Seattle Pacific University remained unbeaten at home with a 3-0 non-conference men's soccer victory over Grand Canyon Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

Grant Falco (Sr., Veradale, Wa.) also scored for the Falcons (8-4-1), who won for the fourth time in the last five games. They are now 5-0 at home. The Antelopes (4-11-0) lost their fifth in a row.

Falco snapped a scoreless tie in the 70th minute, beating an offside trap to take long pass from Yerkes (So., Gresham, Or.) and convert a breakaway from 14 yards to the lower right corner. It was Falco's fifth goal of the year and his first in the last seven games.

Falco played a role in the second goal as well, relaying a ball up the sideline to Letts Fr., Dublin, Ca.), who took the pass in stride, beat two defenders and found Yerkes unmarked in front for a tap-in. Yerkes leads the team with seven goals. Letts scored his second goal in as many games, heading home a free kick from Brent Egbert (Jr., Bellingham, Wa.) with 5:33 to go.

James Ward (So., Salem, Or.) never made a save in notching his fourth shutout, of which three have been at home. SPU finished with a 21-3 advantage in shots and 9-1 in corner kicks.

Both teams produced clear opportunities to score in the first half.

Grand Canyon's Marcelo Soria dribbled around Ward but could not control the ball before it was cleared by a defender. Late in the half, the Falcons' Michael Schefter (Jr., Yakima, Wa.) unleashed a 10-yard blast which Antelopes goalie Nathan Edgin parried.

David Smith (So., Corvallis, Or.), who scored five goals for SPU in the first five games before suffering a fractured jaw, saw his first action since sustaining the injury Sept. 16.

Seattle Pacific goes on the road for its next two games, beginning Monday at Cal Poly Pomona.
