SEATTLE, WA. (Oct. 5) -- Middle hitter Monica
Herrera (Jr., Lima, Peru/Mercy College) and Carri Colvin (Sr.,
Vancouver, Wa./Prairie) combined for 32 kills to lead the Seattle
Pacific University volleyball team past Seattle University 30-26,
30-25, 24-30, 30-26 Saturday night at SU's Connolly Center. The
Redhawks entered the weekend unbeaten in Great Northwest Athletic
Conference action and in first place in the conference.
In a patented Falcons (3-4, 4-10) strategy, SPU
did not overpower the Redhawks (5-2, 13-3), but used solid defense
to wear them down and took advantage of easy opportunities to
score. Both teams finished the match with comparable numbers,
although the Falcons served extremely well against the Redhawks
who struggled at the line. SPU notched 10 service aces while SU
recorded just six and 17 errors.
Katy Higgins (Jr., Kirkland, Wa./Redmond) led
the Falcons with 40 assists and a season-high three blocks.
In addition to leading the Falcons offensive
assault, Herrera also slammed a season-high five service aces.
Kathleen Monda (So., Woodinville,
Wa./Washington State) led SPU in the accuracy department with a
.250 hitting percentage on 20 attempts, while Andrea Pennington
(Jr., Bellingham, Wa./Whatcom CC) led the Falcons with 25 digs.
SPU returns home next weekend four straight
home matches. The Falcons tip off their homestand Friday night
against Humboldt State at 7 p.m.
