Falcons Hit Net Four Times in Second Half of Chico State Win
September 28, 2002

SEATTLE (Sept. 28) - Jeremy Yerkes snapped a scoreless tie and ignited a run of four second-half goals as Seattle Pacific University defeated Chico State 4-0 before a capacity crowd of 992 fans at Interbay Stadium Saturday night in a nonconference men's soccer game.

Michael Brkich (So., Vancouver, BC), playing against his former team, set-up the Yerkes (So., Gresham, Or.) goal and converted a penalty kick for the Falcons' (5-3-1) second goal. Ross Vaillancourt (Fr., Bedford, NH) and Brent Egbert (Jr., Bellingham, Wa./Sehome) also scored.

Seattle Pacificc, winless in its last two outings, took command from the outset and finished with a 14-1 advantage in shots and 7-0 in corner kicks. But, thanks to the shot-stopping heroics of goalkeeper Dustin Eastment, the Wildcats (2-6-0) remained in the game until midway through the second period.

When Eastment failed to cut off a driven right-wing cross from Brkich, Yerkes was there to score from 6 yards in the 57th minute. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Less than eight minutes later, Brkich, who played at Chico in 2000, beat Eastment with his spot kick to the right corner. The penalty was called after Eastment brought down the Falcons' Michael Schefter at the top of the box.

Vaillancourt scored his first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute, beating Eastment to Tom Funk's cross after Grant Falco's freeing backheel.

With only 23 seconds to go, Egbert finished from 14 yards. Christian Scholze switched play from the left to find him wide open.

Chico State got off only the sole shot, but it nearly was the first goal of the game. Chris Wondolowski struck an 18-yard shot which was blocked on the goal line by defender Matt Laughlin and then collected by goalie James Ward. It was Ward's second shutout and the team's fourth of the season.

SPU resumes its three-game home stand Saturday when it hosts No. 3-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills. Chico plays at Seattle University Monday afternoon before returning home.
