SEATTLE (Sept. 27) -- Monica Herrera (Jr.,
Lima, Peru/Mercy) slammed22 kills to lead the Seattle Pacific
University volleyball team past Alaska Anchorage, 30-22, 30-26,
25-30, 30-28, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup
Friday at Brougham Pavilion. SPU has now won two of its last three
GNAC matches.
The Falcons (2-2, 3-8) roared out of the
starting gates against the Seawolves (2-3, 6-7), building a 8- 1
lead behind a pair of blocks from Andra Taylor (Jr., Camas,
Wa./Mt. Hood CC) and Herrera. SPU went on to record a .450 hitting
percentage in the first game, led by eight kills from Herrera and
a .714 hitting mark by Andrea Pennington (Jr., Bellingham,
Wa./Whatcom CC).
The second game was a seesaw battle as neither
team led by more than two points following a 20-20 stalemate. The
Falcons finally pulled away with a 4-0 run that was capped off by
a thundering kill, ace and block by SPU.
The Seawolves eluded a sweep with a victory in
game three. Anchorage broke a tight score with a 7- 0 run in the
middle of the game and fended off a late rally by the Falcons to
seal their only game victory of the match.
In the final game of the night, SPU used a
string of eight straight points served up by Katy Higgins (Jr.,
Kirkland, Wa./Redmond) to build a lead that did not fade until the
Seawolves pulled to within one points at 29-28 after trailing by
as many as eight.
SPU is home again tomorrow night to take on the
Alaska Fairbanks in a 5 p.m. start at the Pavilion.
